Timetabling of the Hertford North line has changed since first recce, and not all trains now stop at Crew's Hill. This alternative can be picked up at next stop Cuffley, and if you are heading west to Welwyn, bearing in mind Broxbourne Woods NNR is a little rough going, it's a good one. Surprisingly hilly however, it has its own off-road challenges – and a different pub.
On Spoke 1N, entering Goff's Oak (gated road ends), L on Lulworth Ave through to Cuffley Hill L. Cuffley is at the foot of the hill; under the bridge and R on Tolmers Road through to Home Wood. The broad path is No Cycling, but it's but a brief walk to Carbone Hill - R up to Newgate Street. R and L 2.9 on a private road that turns to a track, L White Stubbs Lane 4.4 and R on a pleasant bridleway 4.7 to Bayford 5.6. Follow signs to Hertingfordbury until the Hertfordshire branch line Arc 12 merged Cole Green Way hoves into view. Welwyn is L, Hertford R.
